Joyce Yu-Jean Lee Artist Talk

Image
Today Joyce Yu-Jean Lee came to talk to us about her artwork. She currently teaches at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She most recent project and exhibit is about internet censorship and it's a project that viewers can interact with virtually. But, she was not always an artist. She was born and raised in Dallas, TX and she comes from a family of Chinese immigrants. Since she was American born Chinese, aspiring to be an artist, or becoming an artist is definitely not the norm. Most Chinese parents want their children to become lawyers or doctors or etc. She went to the University of Pennsylvania for Communications and Psychology and when she graduated she starting working for Ralph Lauren. She quickly found out that she hated working in the fashion industry. She worked this 9-5 job in NYC during the day, but at night she would take classes at the Art Students League of NY. This is how she first got involved with the arts as an "apprentice". She neve

PostModernism Project

My PostModernism piece is definitely something else. The color scheme is analogous or one can argue that it is complementary because of the limited use of color. I chose to use the colors from my original photoshopped image in the center. By adding the red and black paint and the black ink it really makes everything from the center image pop and stand out. I really wanted to focus on creating a fearful, dark, and horror kind of vibe. This piece is constantly making the viewer's eyes move across the image. The focal point of this piece would have to be the center image. It can be argued that their are leading lines created by the arms and the lines of black ink guiding the observer to the center. Also, the position of the red handprint contributes to this as well. The value of the piece is generally dark and the contrast of the white bristol pad helps the red thumbprints seem more visible. Even though the piece has many different elements to it and is not exactly symmetrical, there

PostModernism

I really enjoyed this article because PostModernism is the world we live in right now. After reading the article it definitely gave me a true understanding for what PostModernism is, because if you're someone living in it, you might not be fully aware that history is being made right now and what exactly that history is. The article says that "in the PostModernism age, it is difficult to get through the day without confronting many different realities". I found this to be completely true because now in today's society everyone's culture and society are mixed together and intertwined that not one society "dominates" over the other. The definition for PostModernism that the author gives us is "mixing of identities, realities, cultures, races, gender roles, technologies, economies, cyberspaces, mediascapes" and the example he uses is if someone were to turn on the TV, they could hear an Irish band playing a song that has a mix of Indian raga, heav

Colors Podcast

The podcast starts out with talking about Sir Issac Newton and how at the age of 22 he asked himself "What are colors?". Being one of the most famous physicists in history, this question intrigued him so much that he stuck a knife in his eye because he wanted to know if the light was without or within. He eventually got his hands on a prism and he was able to conclude that when light hit the prism, it would divide the light into it's constituent parts and therefore providing color. All this information though is just the introductory part of the podcast. When the real podcast starts, they start to talk about the way we perceive and see colors is different from the way a dog sees color or a crow sees color. Then from there, they start to talk about the mantis shrimp, which is where they started to lose my attention. As they continue to talk about color, they start to talk about what it would be like if we were able to boost our levels of seeing color, for example if we wer

WhiteScapes Activity

The photo on the left is a white piece of paper against the white window shade in my room. The window shade has a more darker tone kind of like a gray, while the piece of paper has a more rosy color. Now, this is the same piece of paper against the window shade but the light in my room was a lot darker. I turned the overhead lights off, but kept my string lights on. Compared to the first photo where the objects both look cold, now they both have very warm qualities. The window shape resembles a brown shade, kind of like a very light coffee color and the piece of paper now has a deeper rosy color than before.

Visiting the BMA

Going to the BMA on Thursday during class was definitely a lot of fun. Although we didn't have as much time to see all the artwork that the museum has on display I got to look at some pretty awesome pieces. The assignment this week was to choose three works of art and to sketch them in our sketch book, find the focal point, composition, eye path, and to say what interested us about the work of art. Below will be the three works of art that I chose to study. Rorschach by Andy Warhol, 1984 The first piece I decided to sketch was Andy Warhol's Rorschach. I chose this painting because I've always had an interest in modern and contemporary art and I really admire Andy Warhol's work. I thought this painting was interesting about it's an ink blot, like the one's that they use during therapy sessions. I liked the idea of the ink blot because usually when psychiatrists show you an ink blot they ask you "What do you see?". This goes back to my point in a
